On Spy Wednesday’s Instantly-Granted Breakfast Wish: A Sheer Coincidence – or a Manna from Heaven?

Summary

Waking up late and hungry on Spy Wednesday, 27 March 2024, I suddenly craved to eat corned beef for breakfast. Nonetheless, I was too lazy to either cook or to drive to a restaurant. Walking at the house’s veranda, I saw a covered plate. The content was a complete breakfast set: rice, corned beef, and egg, a compliment of my sister-in-law! A sheer coincidence, an instant miracle – or just being lucky? Whatever you believe, I contend that we should be more grateful for the daily inconspicuous blessings we receive.

1. Spy Wednesday Morning, 27 March 2024

Based on my smartwatch, I woke up at precisely 0900 on Wednesday, 27 March 2024. This day of the Holy Week is often called as Holy Wednesday. Others refer to it as ‘Spy Wednesday’ because this was the day when Judas Iscariot conspired with the Roman authorities to betray Jesus Christ.

The previous night, there was a five-hour blackout (from 1830 until about 2300) where I live. I refer to the village of Tiniguiban in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Philippines. To catch up on my pending writing chores, I still worked until past two o’clock, already a wee hour of dawn.

I felt both lethargic and terribly hungry upon waking up. Instantaneously, I craved a rice-based meal of corned beef and egg. I didn’t know why I preferred such a breakfast set. Normally, I want a combination of rice, egg, and longganisa (a pork-based Filipino sausage). Since it was already late, I thought of just partaking in a breakfast-lunch combo.

Unfortunately, I was not inclined to do either option so I could eat my preferred breakfast. The first option was going to Jollibee, a Filipino fast-food restaurant. The nearest branch, though, is some two kilometers away. I was feeling lazy and couldn’t motivate myself to drive.

The second option was to just cook by myself. Although the kitchen had available ingredients, I was not in the mood to cook on a Spy Wednesday. The thought of cracking eggs, opening the corned beef tin with a knife (the can opener got busted a few days ago!), and going through the cooking motion sent a revulsive sensation down my spine. My dream breakfast of rice, corned beef, and egg was going down the drain.

I remained in bed, thinking of other possible creative options – aside from either self-cooking or driving to Jollibee. Still in a half-dazed state, no other alternatives came to my mind. Without any warning, a thought just flashed in my subconscious.

What if somebody just gives me a complimentary breakfast set of rice, corned beef, and egg? Instantaneously, I canceled my own thought. An avid believer in Greek logic, I told myself that such a wild thought would not happen. I convinced myself to be realistic and to simply prepare the most straightforward breakfast: toast two slices of bread and fill them in with cheese spread. Nothing more, nothing less.

Despite still wanting to stay in bed, I forced myself to get up. I proceeded with my usual waking-up routine: praying in silence, expressing my gratitude to The Almighty for being alive; putting my maintenance Hyabak eye drops; cleaning the nostril tubing of my continuous positive airway pressure machine; and making up my bed. (I often ignore the advice of a Feng-Shui teacher that making up the bed is the foremost first task to undertake upon waking up!)

Then, I left the room and weighed myself in the living room. Still overweight despite daily walks. No miracle. I couldn’t check my blood pressure as the unit’s battery was flat. “Is this the start of a bad day?”, I casually asked myself.

Afterwards, I opened the main door. As I slowly walked to the porch area, something caught my attention. I saw a covered plate on the small veranda table that may have come from Divina (my sister-in-law) who every now-and-then shares some meals with me at no particular time (see Figure 1). I began to get intrigued, though. I didn’t open the lid immediately but carried it straight away to the dining area.

2. Lucky Free Breakfast

While sitting alone at the dining table, my heart started to palpitate as I stared intently at the covered plate. I was getting more excited; I had become fully awake at once.  Several questions raced through my mind in rapid succession. Is statistics being defied with what’s inside the plate? Is an incredible luck happening right before my very eyes? Will an insane Holy Week miracle unfold on this Spy Wednesday morning of 27 March 2024?

Taking one deep breath through my nose, I slowly exhaled through my mouth. I needed time to compose myself before opening the enclosed plate’s contents. Initially, I intended to open the cover using the traditional counting of one, two, and three. Although alone, I couldn’t hold off my excitement, so I opted for an extended counting scheme. I decided to count out loud using the 10 Korean numbers I learned long ago in my Tae-Kwon-Do classes.  Hana is 1 and yeol is 10. Hana, dul, set, net, daseot, yeoseot, ilgop, yeodeol, ahop, yeol. When I finally blurted out yeol, I simultaneously opened the plate cover. Bingo! I was staring at a breakfast set of rice, corned beef, and egg (see Figure 2)! It was like a manna that came down from heaven.

I was astonished for extended moments and didn’t know what to say in stillness. Instinctively, I looked up at the heaven and thanked God. Still jubilant, I returned to my room and opened my laptop. It was time to scribble my candid thoughts while still fresh in my mind. I wrote this memorable event as part of my daily gratitude journal.

3. Adding Dessert and Coffee!

Returning to the kitchen and grabbing a pair of spoon and fork, I deliberately partook my meal without any haste. I took my own sweet time while savoring the meal. I like eating egg with tomato ketchup. When I opened the fridge, there was still a sizable remnant of Heinz ketchup!

Since I was already fortunate to have my complimentary breakfast, I decided to push my luck further. I decided to pamper myself with a dessert and a flavored coffee. Usually, I try to avoid extra calories after my main meal. But I regarded that particular breakfast as a cheat meal!

Back to the room, I rummaged through my wife’s plastic box of snacks. There, I found a pack of Oreo cookies. No, I didn’t get all! I just took a pack with three small pieces. Typically, I take a black coffee to go with dessert. But on that Spy Wednesday, I decided to forgo calorie counting. I mixed the Nescafe roasted coffee with Nestle dairy creamer and liberally added brown sugar. It tasted sweet and creamy. I leisurely sipped my flavored coffee while savoring the velvety texture of the Oreo cookies (see Figure 3).

4.     Reflection on Being Grateful

When I shared what happened with some friends, they gave three ‘cluster’ of interpretations. The first is supernatural – it was a ‘divine intervention’. A religious enthusiast claimed that it was God’s instant miracle. Whitney Houston used to say: “There can be miracles when you believe.” Yet I find it challenging to comprehend as I never fully believed in one. It also couldn’t be an answered prayer as I didn’t pray but simply wished. I likewise remembered the popular song I Don’t Believe in Miracles. (Russ Ballard wrote this song and first released by Colin Blunstone in 1972, although I prefer the America band version in 1980.)

The two other clusters are not mutually exclusive but have varying degrees of overlap. The second explanation contends that the incident was just an instance of ‘pure luck’. This elucidation came from a social gambler who likened it to a gambling event whereby I got what I needed to win at that particular game round. He likened it to Tong Its (a Filipino version of American poker), where an opponent throws the card that I needed to win. Or a mahjong game where I pulled the tile that I’d been waiting to get in order to win. There was nothing extraordinary about the combo corned beef meal. Full stop.

Thirdly, a mathematician argued it was just a simple case of a ‘statistical outlier’. It means that what occurred is still within the realm of possibilities. Why? Because Divina, although they live about 100 meters away, often shares some of their family meals with me. Hence, she simply gave the breakfast set of rice, corned beef, and egg that I craved that morning. It would have been dramatic – that may be called something else – if Divina never previously shared any food with me. Logically, I am more akin to taking this third explanation.

I have written this blog to argue that we ought to be more consciously grateful for our blessings (see Figure 4). We often take for granted many inconspicuous blessings in our everyday lives. I just provide here three illustrative examples to elucidate my point. I was the beneficiary by a kind act of a tricycle driver who halted the incoming traffic while I was backing out of my car during a brownout. A stranger opened a local mall’s door while I carried a heavy stuff with my two hands. Once, I got the last available slot from an out-going car in a rather crowded commercial parking area. We often do not recognize the many incredible blessings that come to us every day. The reason is that our mind has always been preoccupied with anticipating a major, mind-boggling miracle.

I leave it to the readers to choose which of the three explanations best describe my experience. The bottom line is I wanted to eat corned beef and egg for breakfast on the fateful morning of Spy Wednesday, 27 March 2024. And I instantly got my breakfast wish without asking someone for it – or expending any significant effort on my part. I contend that such an event was a blessing – more than anything else. Albeit, an incredible one.
