I was in Australia from December 1995 to March 2000 to pursue my doctorate degree (PhD) at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland. Although I went back several times to the Philippines as part of my PhD field works, I have so much stories to share within this period. These are in terms of adventures, unique cultural practices (such as the Melbourne Cup), family life of overseas students (my wife and three children lived with me for two and a half years) and racism, among others.

I traveled up north to Cairns, all the way to Darwin, Northern Territory, where my in-laws live. Down south of Queensland, I went to Brisbane several times. The nearby Gold Coast is simply spectacular in terms of beaches – as well as bikini-clad women!

Six years later in 2006, I attended a conference in Geelong, Melbourne. After a decade in 2017, I was sponsored as a Visiting Professor for nearly a month at University Technology Sydney (UTS). Overall, Australia is such a wonderful country that is generally very welcoming to strangers.

Detailed narratives will be shared in the next blogs.
