On Being Fast Versus Being Rich: A Brief Discourse On Being Respectful to Strangers

Summary

Don Vito Corleone, the central character of The Godfather (1969 Book of Mario Puzo), reminded his underlings to be respectful of the strangers that they meet. In this context, an arrogant guy ‘outmaneuvered’ an unassuming lady to get the lone parking slot at an elite Sports Club in Metro Manila, Philippines. Find out what she did to his brand-new Mercedes Benz.

Most often, we tend to underestimate strangers that we meet. In particular, we underrate those who look unassuming, those who drive rather ordinary cars, or those who are not smartly-dressed. Thus, we often fall into the trap of overrating our own capability – as well as overestimating our gender category and societal status.

In this context, I am reminded of Mario Puzo’s 1969 bestselling novel, The Godfather (Box 1). I rate this novel among the top 10 bestsellers that I have ever read – and at times re-read – such as Garry Jennings’ Aztec, James Clavell’s Shogun, James Michener’s The Source and Leon Uris’ Trinity. My Ghanaian housemate named Paul Dartney gave his copy to me in 1989 when we were still studying at the University of London’s Wye College in England. I still vividly recall his words: “Michael, this is an excellent novel about Mafia in the US. You won’t regret reading this.” And he was absolutely right, indeed! Everyone is of course familiar with the central character, Don Vito Corleone, the Italian Godfather. Ethnically, he originally hailed from Sicily. In multi-awarded The Godfather movie, Don Vito Corleone was originally portrayed by Marlon Brando while his successor son, Michael Corleone, was portrayed by the multi-awarded actor, Al Pacino.

In one of the book’s conversations, Don Vito was giving advice to his underlings that they must be respectful with the person they are meeting on the street for the first time. It is because you don’t really know who he is, what his powers are, and certainly what he is capable of doing. The Godfather film series are all great but the book rendition, at least to my mind, have better conversational dialogues and more nuggets of wisdom.

Within The Godfather’s context, I wish to narrate this story. Although I did not personally witness the event, I am upfront about that, the rationale behind not underestimating the strangers you encounter on the street is worth re-telling. I have added three caricatures to visualize the story. It was casually shared after a game at the tennis court’s social room, sometime in 2001. The narrator was a club officer and I am not exactly sure if his first name was Vic. During that period, I was still playing tennis at the Quezon Institute Tennis Club in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The event he shared was actually quite short, but it’s lesson in life is still etched in my sub-conscious.

Accordingly, the incident happened at a plush Sports Club in the nearby Makati City, the Central Business District of Metro Manila. It was a place where the wealthy members and their business and professional associates congregate. A few members were idly chatting around in the parking area. At that time, because of a big event, there was only one available slot in the parking area.

A lady who was in her early 40s arrived first. She was driving a typical model of a Toyota Corolla car, which was dirty-white in color. The lady was dressed casually, and she looked quite unassuming – at least from a distance. She was followed closely by a big, burly elderly man in his mid-50s. The bloke was proudly driving a brand-new and latest model car: a glistening grayish Mercedes Benz.

She signaled her indicator to the left and was very slowly turning to park in the lone available parking slot. The trailing guy, however, apparently decided to make an on-the-spot decision.  Seeing a lady who was driving an ordinary car, he probably thought that he could easily bully her.

Instead of allowing her to park, the bloke driving the Mercedes Benz abruptly accelerated and cut her turning lane. To avoid the possible car collision, she abruptly slammed her brake, screeching her Toyota Corolla to a shaking halt. Meantime, the gentleman casually proceeded to occupy the lone parking slot, as if nothing had happened.

He did not immediately get out of his vehicle; instead; he remained parked there for some time, with the engine still running and the air-conditioning system still on. The by-standers were amazed at the man’s unruly behavior.

As expected, the lady disembarked from her Toyota Corolla. Quietly, although with still a regal posture, she walked towards the Mercedes Benz’s owner. Upon reaching the car, she gently knocked at the man’s driver seat window. The man rolled down the glass window. I shall paraphrase the ensuing conversation as relayed by our club officer.

“Why did you cut my turning lane?” the woman asked, still in a civil tone. The man did not respond at once but was just half-smiling. “You know very well that I came ahead of you in this lone parking slot,” she continued. As if jesting or mocking the lady, the guy gave an unusual response within the hearing distance of the by-standers that had now congregated into a small crowd.

“You were driving quite slow”, the gentleman casually responded. “In this world, lady,” he continued, “you must be fast!” (Figure 1) He even added boastful phrases that since he was quite fast, he got the lone parking slot first. The woman left in apparent disgust, without uttering any more word, while the man had indolently remained in the car.

Figure 1. The lady talking with the bloke who got her parking slot.

Still visibly fuming, she got into her Toyota Corolla and switched on the engine. She simply revved the accelerator – so hard on-and-off – while her car was still parked. The sound was like a racing car that is about to take off prior to a competition. People around thought that she was simply venting her frustration with her car’s engine. What followed next was totally unexpected, catching everyone by surprise.

Instead of driving away, she drove her car so fast towards the guy’s Mercedes Benz and violently smashed its rear (Figure 2). Blam!!! That was the collision’s thunderous sound. Given the commotion, more club members congregated around that parking area. Then, she backed out her car, rather slowly. Rather than just leave the wreckage, she smashed the car’s posterior end again. Another Blam! She did the action repeatedly – with more deafening sounds – until the Mercedes Benz’s rear compartment was a complete wreck.

Figure 2. The lady slams the rear of Mercedes Benz with the anterior of her Toyota Corolla.

The anterior of her Toyota Corolla was also badly damaged but the engine was still running. Those around were in complete awe that such a seemingly modest woman could do such a violent act reprisal. Remember the fury of a scorned woman?

Then, the lady got out of her Toyota Corolla, bringing along with her a black handbag. He must have been shocked with what transpired earlier. Still half-dazed, the guy also got out of his car and approached the lady.

They intersected at the side road. “Why did you wreck my brand-new car?” he asked angrily. “This Mercedes Benz costs a fortune! How can you afford to pay for this damage?” he added in a rather loud and threatening voice. The lady merely stood there, and did not immediately respond. Her demeanor, though, was composed.

Instead, she held the handbag’s bottom in her left hand and opened its zipper with her right hand. Then, the same hand searched out for something inside the handbag’s compartment. The guy was caught by another surprise, and had obviously become terrified at that stage. Literally, his earlier display of machismo had gone out of the window. He was like a big dog who started a street fight with a much smaller dog – but now is frightened with tail hanging between its legs.

He slowly backed out, this time in complete panic, of what the lady would do next. Out of obvious fear, he started to perspire. (Who knows if he also urinated!) Everyone thought that she was rummaging for a gun or other deadly weapon (such as a knife or a pepper spray) in her handbag. Given her earlier aggressive behavior, the crowd anticipated that she was capable of doing something more violent – with the worst scenario of shooting the man on-the-spot. Instead of a gun, however, she pulled out an expensive looking laminated business card.

“This is my lawyer’s business card,” she calmly said to the guy who was still slowly backing out. The lady told her in both loud and firm voice that her lawyer shall deal with the payment of the car’s damage. She also added that she could easily pay the commensurate amount. Her parting words, in perfect English, left the listening by-standers in an even greater surprise. “The cost of your Mercedes Benz is peanuts. In this world, you must be rich!” (Figure 3)

Figure 3. Confrontation of the lady and the guy at the parking area.

The man was left absolutely dumbfounded – still in utter disbelief – as the lady slammed her lawyer’s business card to his already sweating chest. He was not able to comprehend the incredible misfortune that had befallen him. How he wished that he did not steal the lady’s parking space, in the first place!

Lessons learned: Never underestimate the unassuming attire and passive demeanor of the person you are meeting and/or encountering for the first time. If you are a male, don’t also take for granted the feeble looking ladies. For all you know, they might possess power, violent behavior, physical capability and riches that are far beyond yours. It is still the best option to avoid a physical confrontation, and walk away from trouble while you still can.

Postscript: The guy turned out to be a high ranking club member. He was already very wealthy by the standard of business elite in Metro Manila. Nonetheless, the lady turned out to be educated abroad, and was the daughter of a far wealthier business scion, who had vast interests in real estate and shipping. Hence, the cost of his brand-new Mercedes Benz was indeed peanuts! Too late to regret and say, if only I did not get her parking slot.
